Functional Capacity Assessments
A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) looks at how a person manages everyday activities and identifies any areas where additional support may improve their independence, safety and participation.
Our Occupational Therapists take a practical, person-centred approach, considering how an individual functions across their home, work, school and community environments. The assessment may explore areas such as mobility, personal care, communication, cognition, social participation, domestic activities and the ability to complete everyday tasks.
An FCA provides a clear picture of a person’s strengths, functional challenges and support needs. Following the assessment, a detailed report is prepared outlining findings and providing practical, evidence-based recommendations for supports, equipment, services or environmental changes where appropriate.
Our focus is on understanding the whole person and how their condition or circumstances affect everyday life, so that recommendations are practical, individualised and aligned with their goals.
At Brisbane Occupational Therapy, Functional Capacity Assessments can be completed for a range of purposes, including:
- NDIS – to provide evidence of functional needs and assist with recommendations for reasonable and necessary supports.
- NIISQ – to assess current functional capacity, care requirements and supports following a serious injury.
- Support at Home – to identify the supports, equipment and home-based strategies that may assist an older person to remain safe and independent at home.
- Medico-Legal Assessments – to provide an objective assessment of functional abilities, limitations, care needs and future support requirements for legal or compensation matters.
